The clutch is a mechanism used for short-term disconnection of the flywheel of the engine from the transmission of a vehicle, for the smooth connection in order to choose the gear, vibration damping, decreasing the loading on the transmission elements. This is a connecting element between the gearbox and the car motor.

Types of clutches
  • By design:
    • Friction. The torque is transmitted by the frictional forces.
    • Hydraulic. The torque is transmitted through the fluid flow.
    • Electromagnetic. The torque is regulated by the magnetic field.
  • By the number of clutch discs:
    • single-plate;
    • two-plate;
    • multi-plate.
  • By the peculiarities of friction surface:
    • dry;
    • wet.
  • By the clutch switch:
    • impermanent closed;
    • permanent closed.
  • By the torque flow number:
    • dual-flow;
    • single-flow.
Clutch components:

The most widely spread in the automotive industry is a friction single-plate dry clutch. We are going to examine its structure:

  1. Housing. It protects the mechanism from damage.
  2. Tangential spring. It connects the housing and the pressure plate.
  3. Throwout bearing. Responsible for the stable operation of the crankshaft.
  4. Crankshaft. Converts reciprocating motion into torque.
  5. Damper spring. Dampens torsion vibrations, provides smooth switching.
  6. Friction plate. It is connected to the input shaft.
  7. Pressure plate. It provides the contact between friction plate and flywheel.
  8. Flywheel. It transmits torque.
  9. Clutch cover assembly. It consists of a pressure plate, the diaphragm spring and the housing.
  10. Clutch pressure ring. Fastens the diaphragm spring to the housing.
  11. Stay-bolt. Fastens the diaphragm spring to the housing.
  12. Diaphragm spring. Affects the pressure plate.
  13. Clutch release bearing. Connects gear and clutch.
  14. Alignment tool.
  15. The input shaft of a transmission. Connects a transmission with a clutch.
  16. Clutch release fork.
  17. Slave cylinder.
Exploitation

The heaviest load of all elements of the clutch when the car is started falls on the friction plate. Driving style and strange habits of motorist primarily affect this detail. Under normal operating conditions the friction plate can without any difficulties overcome more than one hundred thousand kilometers. But this element can be brought in defective condition very quickly. This is popularly called "burn" the clutch.

Signs of clutch failure
  • Partial shutdown at which the vehicle slips out of gear accompanied with noise, vibration, the pedal will become harder to press or disengage.
  • Incomplete switching-on, which is accompanied by a burning smell inside the car, increased fuel consumption, engine power loss, engine overheating.
  • Unstable and jerky operation of vehicle.
Clutch failure
  • Mechanical damage and worn-out condition of friction plate linings.
  • Incorrect operation of the clutch release fork.
  • The deformation of the friction plate.
  • Worn-out condition of the pressure plate.
  • Oil contamination of friction plate linings.
  • Worn-out condition of the flywheel surface.
  • Worn-out condition of friction plate splines.
  • Worn-out condition or breakage of the diaphragm spring.
  • Damper springs breakage.
  • Worn-out condition or breakage of clutch release bearing.
  • Slave cylinder damage.
Causes of clutch failure
  • Starting at high speeds.
  • Regular pressing the clutch pedal while driving.
  • Terms of limiting operation of the clutch parts.
  • Low quality of parts.
  • Deformation of motor or gearbox oil seals, which leads to oiling of frictional linings.
  • Violation of the basic rules of exploitation of the vehicle.
Clutch repair
